Soul Legal grew out of Sorgiovanni Legal, the practice Rebecca Sorgiovanni founded in 2007 to represent injured members of the Local Government Racing and Cemeteries Employees Union, a union established in 1903. As her reputation for down to earth, personal representation of sick and injured people spread, the practice took on clients well beyond the union. In 2018 she joined with Kevin Wong, a partner with more than 25 years in personal injury law, and together they founded Soul Legal.
The firm is named for the client, not its founders. That choice sits at the centre of how it works. Clients deal directly with a qualified lawyer rather than a case manager, and Rebecca and Kevin built Soul Legal specifically to give injured people the kind of attention that is hard to sustain inside a large, profit driven practice.
When the firm opened on 1 January 2018, the founders framed it through the words of GK Chesterton: the point of a new year is not that we should have a new year, but that we should have a new soul. Soul Legal is led by its two founding Directors, Kevin Wong and Rebecca Sorgiovanni. Between them they have appeared in courts and tribunals from WorkCover WA through to the High Court of Australia, and both have acted in cases that changed the law for injured people in this state and nationally. Kevin Wong has practised personal injury law since graduating from UWA Law School in 1991. He began at the firm now known as D’Angelo and Partners, moved to Friedman Lurie Singh in 1999 and became a partner there in 2002, then left to co-found Soul Legal in 2018. His work runs from minor injuries through to catastrophic, life changing disability claims, including matters that have resolved for multi-million dollar sums.
His experience covers common law negligence and breach of duty of care, as well as breach of statutory duty under legislation including the Australian Consumer Law, the Insurance Contracts Act, the Occupiers’ Liability Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Mines Safety and Inspection Act. He has appeared in WorkCover, the District Court, the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, the Supreme Court, the Federal Court and the High Court.
Kevin was the instructing solicitor in De Sales v Ingrilli [2002] HCA 52, the High Court case that abolished the discount for the chance of remarriage once applied to widows in dependency claims. He was counsel at first instance and co-counsel on appeal in Westrupp v BIS Industries Limited [2015] FCAFC 173, which established workers compensation coverage for fly-in fly-out workers, and he was among the first lawyers to file in the Federal Court’s Insurance List when it opened in 2016. He was recommended in the 2017 Doyles Guide and is a member of the Australian Lawyers Alliance.
Rebecca Sorgiovanni has practised personal injury law since 1997 and founded her own practice, Sorgiovanni Legal, in 2007 before co-founding Soul Legal. Educated at UWA and Murdoch University, she acts across motor vehicle accidents, work accidents, public liability, medical negligence, victims of crime and insurance contract disputes, with further work in industrial relations, discrimination and family law. She is an accredited alternative dispute resolution practitioner and a registered family law mediator, trained through Centrecare and Relationships Australia.
Rebecca is the recommended lawyer of the Local Government Racing and Cemeteries Employees Union, and she has lobbied government to protect common law entitlements for injured workers. She has appeared in the Supreme Court of Appeal, the District Court, the State Administrative Tribunal, the Fair Work Commission, the WA Industrial Relations Commission, WorkCover WA, the Equal Opportunity Commission and the Coroner’s Court, among others. She established new law in Re Her Honour Judge Schoombee; Ex Parte Attorney General for Western Australia [2011] WASCA 129, and she represented the family of a primary school boy who drowned on a school excursion.

If you have been hurt by a crime, including assault or sexual abuse, you may be able to claim compensation as a victim of crime. Changes to the law mean you may still be able to claim for abuse that happened many years ago.
If you are bitten or attacked by a dog in WA, the owner may be liable under the Dog Act 1976, and their home and contents insurance may cover your compensation.
Since 1 July 2016, the Catastrophic Injuries Support Scheme has provided lifetime treatment, care and support for people catastrophically injured in WA motor vehicle accidents. Soul Legal acts in these claims, and in the disability and superannuation claims that often run alongside a life changing injury.
If you are hurt in a car, truck, motorbike, bicycle or quad bike crash in WA, you may be able to claim regardless of who caused it. You are generally expected to lodge an online crash report and a Notice of Intention to Make a Claim with the Insurance Commission of WA (ICWA) within six months of the crash. A late notice is not automatically fatal, because ICWA has to show it was prejudiced to defeat the claim, but acting early protects you. WA also applies a threshold for pain and suffering damages.
If you are injured because a place was unsafe or a product was dangerous, for example a slip or a trip in a shopping centre or public area, you may have a public liability claim. Many people are hurt each year by hazards that should never have been there.
If you are injured at work, or while travelling for work, you may be entitled to workers compensation for lost income, medical and rehabilitation costs, and permanent impairment. If a serious injury was caused by your employer failing to keep you safe, you may also have a separate common law claim on top of your statutory entitlements.
